Transdev Director Operations in Hyattsville, Maryland


The Director of Operations reports to the General Manager and is responsible for directing the daily activities of all operators and coordinating the activities of facility managers. Additionally this role has oversight of the customer service and dispatch staff. The Director will work with cross functional teams to ensure collaboration in achieving performance gaols.


  • Works with IT to ensure that reservation system is installed and maintained; oversees training for all relevant users.

  • Ensures that operations resources are scheduled efficiently and all routes and shifts are fully staffed

  • Works closely with the maintenance department to ensure that all operation requirements are met

  • Reviews performance reports and establishes performance goals; resolves interdepartmental or inter-facility issues; ensures that process improvements are implemented.

  • Makes hiring decisions for authorized roles; evaluates the work performance of staff; oversees compliance with labor contracts.

  • Maintains Equal Employment Opportunity compliance and reporting.

  • Ensures that accident/incident investigations are completed accurately; oversees the implementation of any safety and training as a result of accident/incident reviews.

  • At the direction of the General Manager, manages relationships with employees, customers, suppliers, contractors, industry associations, the community, legislatures and representatives, regulatory agencies, and the media.

  • Ensures that all safety goals and directives are met; assists with compliance of all safety training/ standards and requirements to include drug and alcohol training/testing.

  • Develops and monitors Operations department budget; assists with setting of business unit goals and financial performance criteria for operating locations; communicates goals and financial performance to employees.

  • Assists in the development and oversight of bid workups and analysis and participates in the bid process.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all information.

  • Working knowledge of trapeze.

  • Supervise team of operations managers and supervisors.

  • Assists the General Manager with supervision of location staff. Communicates job requirements and expectations. Monitors the performance of staff and provides coaching and guidance as required.

  • Conduct a walk around the premises prior to beginning the day’s activities to evaluate the operation. This will include making documentation of items related to safety, checking parking conditions, random inspection of buses, cleanliness of the location, office and shop conditions, and all other items related to this evaluation.

  • Other duties as required for the safe and efficient operation of the facility.


Education, Licensing, and Certifications Required :

  • High school diploma or equivalent. BA/BS in transportation or logistics preferred.

Education, Licensing, and Certifications Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business Administration, Logistics, Transportation or related field preferred

Experience :

  • 5+ years operations experience in a safety sensitive environment.

  • 5+ year’s previous supervisory/management experience.

  • Experience developing or managing a budget.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high pressure environment.

  • Experience dealing with the Union and working in the transportation industry a must.

  • Valid CDL class B with passenger and airbrake endorsements.

  • Experience dealing with federal, state, and local agencies (i.e., DOT, FTA, OSHA, etc.).

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Must be able to demonstrate poise, tact, diplomacy and possesses good judgment and discretion.

  • Must possess ability to lead and motivate employees.

  • Proven adult training skills and ability to make presentations a must.

  • Detail oriented, well organized, and possess effective time management skills.

  • Proven customer service and interpersonal skills a must.

  • General knowledge of Windows-based computer operating system and Microsoft office package.

  • Must be able to work as a member of the team.

  • Ability to interact professionally with internal and external customer on all levels and be able to work well with diverse groups.

Travel requirement (as a percent): 20% travel between properties and for meetings and outside training

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Must be able to maintain a DOT medical card

  • Must submit to drug testing and a criminal background check

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.

  • Primary work is accomplished in an office or in a cubicle space equipped with a telephone and computer; time is spent sitting, typing, or looking at a computer.
