The Assistant Maintenance Manager will perform professional and administrative work directing the proper maintenance support services. This position reports directly to the maintenance manager and is responsible for the support of the maintenance department and also maintenance related projects assigned by the Maintenance Manager.


  1. Under the guidance of the Maintenance Manager, supervises staff members in the repair, preventive maintenance, servicing and cleaning of diesel powered buses and service vehicles.

  2. Manages maintenance personnel including hiring, training, scheduling, promoting, discipline and terminations.

  3. Monitors technician performance and initiates appropriate disciplinary action in a manner consistent with company/location policy.

  4. Ensures that all mechanics have the proper licenses and certifications.

  5. Supervises and inspects major repairs and provide technical assistance to mechanics.

  6. Develops work orders and the evaluation of all repairs performed by both the technicians and outside vendors

  7. In the absence of Maintenance Manager monitors radio communications during route times and ensures that all operator inquiries related to the mechanical operation of the vehicle are responded to immediately

  8. Advises Maintenance Manager of individual situations that require further attention.

  9. Responsible for vehicle titles and registration; which includes Vehicle Change Notice’s and annual registration fees.

  10. Assists Maintenance Manager to ensure DOT compliance and inspections of revenue and service equipment.

  11. Other duties to ensure the efficient operation of the maintenance facility.


  1. College degree preferred.

  2. 3 years’ experience in the repair and maintenance of all types of automotive and transit equipment or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  3. Knowledge of diesel engines and/or internal combustion engines, automatic transmissions, air brakes, steering, and drivelines.

  4. Must possess a basic understanding of the theory of electricity and also be able to read and understand wiring diagrams.

  5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals.

  6. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  7. ASE certification a plus.

  8. Ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers’ License with a passenger endorsement.

  9. Proficiency using Microsoft Office (including Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint)

  10. Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential information/situations.

  11. Must be a team player yet able to work well independently.

  12. Must be able to work well with a diverse group of internal and external customers.

  • Exposure to cleaning solutions, oils, and other liquids.

  • Must be able to travel for company training, meeting or support missions.
