Operates engine room and machinery operations of a marine vessel (inspected state owned vessel under U.S. Coast Guard regulations).


  • Coordinates overall operations and routine maintenance for assigned vessel; systems of responsibility include main propulsion diesel engines, main electrical generating plants, electrical and lighting systems, hydraulic systems, sanitation systems and pumping systems.

  • Maintains required engineering logs and records, and prepares reports.

  • Executes safe refueling operations.

  • Follows safe workplace practices.

  • Ensures that work area is clean and organized.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all information

Other duties as required.


Education, Licensing, and Certifications :

  • High school diploma or equivalent, such as GED

  • Training in firefighting and first aid

  • Possesses a United States Coast Guard Engineer’s license for a motor ferry vessel

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong knowledge of vessel engine room and related equipment maintenance; strong knowledge of vessel facilities’ and systems maintenance.

  • Ability to understand and interpret instructional manuals containing schematic designs

  • Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and repair equipment

Travel requirement (as a percent): <5% for occasional meetings

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Must submit to drug testing and a criminal background check

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.

  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to manipulate, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; and talk or hear.

  • Must be able to see, with or without correction, close vision to be able to read meters, gauges and instruments

  • Regularly required to balance; stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; and smell.

  • Regularly required to work at various heights.

  • Regularly required to lift up to 100 pounds.

  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather and environment conditions.
