Transdev Assistant Director of Operations in Raleigh, North Carolina


Job Summary:

The Asst. Director of Operations reports directly to the Director of Operations and is responsible for assisting the Director of Operations in the planning, direction, control and evaluation of the Operations Department of the Transit System. This position is included in and classified as a Safety Sensitive Employee and is subject to drug and alcohol testing as prescribed by the Federal Transit Administration.


Essential Duties:

  • Assist in day-to-day operations and activities

  • Reviews daily operations with Dispatchers and Road Supervisors for cost control and policy adherence.

  • May, as directed, represent the transit system in a variety of meetings.

  • Assist transit control over transit operations, including on street supervision of traffic conditions, use of radio control supervisors and of Dispatchers engaged in similar supervision.

  • Assist in gathering, tabulation, and analysis of transit data required.

  • Responsible for assisting client with transit planning.

  • Serve as lead for run-cutting, service planning, operator scheduling.

  • Remain on call during and provide planning for critical service periods, such as in the event of a major traffic delay and adverse weather conditions.

  • Assist in negotiations and discussions with Union representatives in matters relating to grievance procedures and interpretation of collective bargaining agreement.

  • Assist in control over mass transit personnel requirements, in particular achieving the necessary balance to avoid excessive payment of overtime wages.

  • Assist in maintaining effective discipline among a large group of employees, involving the responsibility for development of personnel, commendations, reprimands, or dismissals, when required, within the Operations Department.

  • Work closely with the Maintenance Department on matters affecting the overall availability, serviceability and allocation of types of equipment required for meeting transit service needs.

  • With the approval of the General Manager, hires, disciplines, promotes, and demotes.

  • Performs other duties relative to Operations as needed.


Knowledge Required for the Position:

  • Thorough knowledge of transit operations principles and techniques.

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations related to motor vehicle traffic control and mass transit service.

  • Ability to supervise, evaluate and discipline subordinate employees.

  • Ability to identify, evaluate and resolve emergency and complex transportation situations effectively.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

  • Ability to perform and supervise a variety of routine clerical duties involving personnel records, maintenance, monetary and time keeping tabulations, summary report preparation, and vehicle and operator scheduling.

  • Experience with or ability to learn service scheduling optimization software (ex. Trapeze, Remix, etc.)

Education and Experience:

  • BA degree OR equivalent combination of education and experiencein transit or related field.

  • Good knowledge of supervisory principles and methods.

  • Must have a valid NC Class “B” CDL with a “P” endorsement

  • Must have a valid and current DOT Medical card/ or can pass DOT Physical

  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time and operate office equipment.

Work Environment:

  • All tasks are typically performed in the main office.

Supervisory Controls:

  • Director of Operations

Supervisory and Management Responsibility:

  • Direct supervision of Operations Assistant, Road Supervisors, Senior Dispatcher, Dispatchers, Bus operators

  • Provides direction in the absence of the Director of Operations
